Blaque Report

Now family, why didn’t none of y’all tell me that I messed up last week? How did y’all let me forget to say Happy Pride during our first episode of Pride Month? That’s crazy. Almost had me slip up on this LGBTQ+ platform and forget to tell my family a happy holiday. Y’all ain’t right, but I forgive you. Because that’s what family is for – forgiveness, love, celebration, and a lil tussle because I know how the girls like to get.

But yes, you heard me right – this month is a holiday. Not just for me, and not just for you. But for everybody. This month is a holiday for all of those who we can’t forget, and whose names we’ll forever say. From those who are looking for their voice, to those who are elevating others, to those who have left theirs behind in forms of language, tools, and resources – we can’t forget them.

So, when I say Happy Pride, I’m actively celebrating our community for all that we’ve been through. I’m actively loving our people for all that they are and all that they aren’t. And I’m actively choosing to forgive those who don’t know how to love us because we now know how to love ourselves.

So, when I say Happy Pride, I’m saying – to my Black Queer, Trans, and Nonbinary family – I love you, and I’m always here to root for you. Because to me, that’s what pride is, supporting the things and the people that you believe in.

And that’s exactly what we’re starting to see more of.. especially from leaders like Hobbes, who was part of the group of youth who worked to organize a monumental Trans Prom on May 22 right in front of the US Capitol building. If that’s not a prime example of believing in yourself and the things you stand for, I don’t know what is. I commend the 100+ trans youth and adults for their continued efforts to show up as their full selves and join the fight towards justice. I’m grateful to witness these young people advocating for themselves because everybody doesn’t always have it in them, but they do – and that right there, is pride history.

That’s a wrap on our Blaque Report with a Q-U-E, and until next week, keep finding ways to celebrate yourself.
